Takeda R&D President Andy Plump to Retire in 2027

Takeda credits Plump with rebuilding its pipeline and advancing late-stage assets.

Editor’s Take: This leadership transition comes after Takeda executed a reorganization of its executive leadership team and business structure earlier this year.

Takeda has announced that Andy Plump, M.D., Ph.D., President Research & Development, and member of the Board of Directors, will retire from the company, effective June 2027.

Plump will remain an active member of the Takeda Executive Team and will continue to lead R&D until a successor has been announced. He will remain a member of the company’s Board of Directors through the Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders in June 2027.

Takeda Representative Director, President & CEO Julie Kim said, “Andy has led Takeda’s R&D through a significant period of transformation and growth. Under his leadership, Takeda’s pipeline was rebuilt with an innovative therapeutic area focus and we now have a robust late-stage pipeline which has delivered three transformative medicines that we are poised to launch in the coming months. On behalf of Takeda’s Board of Directors, our leadership team and colleagues around the world, we thank Andy for his unwavering dedication and visionary leadership. His contributions have advanced groundbreaking science, strengthened our R&D organization and developed exceptional talent, creating a lasting foundation to serve patients for years to come.”

Under Plump’s leadership, Takeda has strengthened its leadership in orexin biology with the U.S. FDA approval of ORZEYFUL for narcolepsy type 1, while also receiving approval of MIMRYLO for erythrocytosis in adults with polycythemia vera. The organization has also developed numerous Phase 3 assets including zasocitinib, a highly selective TYK2 inhibitor poised to become a leading oral psoriasis treatment.

“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to lead Takeda’s R&D organization and work alongside colleagues so deeply committed to patients,” Plump remarked. “I am proud of the progress we have made together and confident in Takeda’s scientific foundation, talented teams and continued ability to deliver life-changing medicines.”
